interview with an employee/friend of a famous fashion designer

okay readers....i have a chance to do a 10-question interview with a friend of mine who works in the fashion industry for a BIG, HUGE name designer. my friend splits his time between sc and new york city. in the comments section, please submit any questions you would like me to ask him regarding trends, fall fashion, fashion in general, differences in ny and sc fashions, etc. will need all questions by SUNDAY, AUGUST 30th. once i get it all compiled, i'll post it on my blog.

what not to wear wednesday

1. pants that are too short. your pants should be no more than 1/2" off the floor with shoes on. no exceptions. if you don't have a full length mirror you need to get one so that you can check the length. if you just stand there and look down at your pants, you won't get the full picture and you'll just think that they are long enough.

2. pants that are tapered. i know that skinny jeans are "in" and, in some cases, it's fine to be trendy and give them a try. BUT, if you are in the habit of wearing things that taper from the knee down...BIG MISTAKE! all that's gonna do is make everything above your knee look even bigger. trust me. and if you don't trust me, just tune in to "what not to wear" on TLC and listen to stacy and clinton talk about "the ice cream cone effect". i mean, who wants to look like an ice cream cone?!

jewelry

thanks to a tip from my sis (thanks juls!) i headed to kohl's and found jewelry heaven! they have SO much to choose from all at reasonable prices. i got 2 necklaces at $12 each. there were a couple of very cool, slightly edgier-yet-vintagey pieces in the vera wang collection. kohl's will be added to my list of go-to places for jewelry from now on.

oh, and i went to banana republic to use my 40% off coupon for this ring and it was gone! so, i just got another one. i can't find it on the website so i can't show a pic, sorry!

OMGoodness! "the rachel zoe project" was better than i could have imagined!!!!! i actually teared up a few times. good stuff. so envious of her job. can't believe i have to wait another 7 whole days for the next episode!

i had a friend/client today who needed some things for her mother. we went to lane bryant at the mall and let me tell you, the 2 girls working in there were THE MOST HELPFUL PEOPLE IN THE ENTIRE MALL! they were so knowledgeable and patient--they had to explain their sizing system a couple of times before we "got" it. AND, while i was in there, i found a SUPER cool necklace like none i've seen anywhere else so, i bought it!

what not to wear wednesday

almost forgot that it's "what not to wear wednesday"!
here we go.

1. dankso clogs--i know some of you are probably wearing them right now and you're not happy to read this. believe me, i wore them sometimes too. until stacy & clinton pointed out that they look like baked potatoes on the end of your legs. even after hearing that, i had a very laid-back winter day in february and i reluctantly put my danskos on. BIG MISTAKE. i broke my ankle. immediately sold them on ebay.

2. overalls--i know this was posted in a previous "what not to wear wednesday" edition but, i was at the gap this weekend and a lady had on SHORT overalls. i should have said something to her, i guess.

3. open toe shoes with socks or hose-- really cool tights are okay as long as most of the foot is covered by the straps of the shoes.

short list today. i've only got 2 minutes to spare until it becomes THURSDAY!

i love jeans. wear them all the time. any weather. any occasion. therefore, you will see lots of posts about jeans on this blog. all you locals, check out these goodies from my friend rebecca. tell her i sent you!

just humor me...

still looking for boots. the fryes that i got in camel and gray aren't going to work. the naots in gray are AWESOME and feel really good but, the heel and sole looks too much like dansko clogs when my pants leg is covering the shaft. so, i have put these on my wish list. if anyone has any suggestions for a flat-low heel, gray, mid calf-knee high, very comfy boot, i'd love to know! (i know one pair of these isn't gray but, purple's my fave so, i had to include them!) please take a minute and let me know which one you like best.

sad and disgusted

i am a little sad and disgusted tonight. i was having a dance party w/ my child and i told him i'd show him how to do a back walk-over. i used to be a pro. please note the word USED. this is where the sadness and disgust comes in.
first of all, i tried to go from a standing position to a back bend. um, yeah. what in the heck was i thinking? when that didn't work, i decided just to get on the ground and push up into a back bend. again, what in the heck? it was like when i first went to therapy for my ankle and i knew what i was supposed to make my muscles do but, something was lost in transmission from my brain to my ankle and i couldn't do anything. same thing tonight. MY ARMS WOULD NOT WORK!!! i was able to get my hips off the ground but my arms were NOT allowing me to push up and support myself.

so sad. i would like to say that this has motivated me to join a gym or take yoga or something but, it really hasn't....i don't think. maybe i'll put a positive spin on it and just continue to remember the good ol' days back when i was flexible.

other boots

here they are. they look brownish but, they have a lot of gray in them. i LOVE the look of the gray fryes i received but, they are just too narrow. sad.
also really like these that i received but, i don't need another pair of boots with a heel.

love and marriage

headed to a marriage retreat overnight with my baby daddy.....
ordered another pair of boots today...will post pics when i return. (and don't worry, i'm not keeping all of these boots. and the shipping-BOTH ways-is free)

i'm far from an expert on make up. i don't normally try the latest tricks and trends but, i've seen one recent trend that i think i might try... blue mascara. now, this could look very 80s and cheesy but, i read that if you first apply coat of black and then do a coat of the blue on the tips only, it'll make your eyes sparkle and make the whites of your eyes brighter. and who doesn't want brighter eyes, right?

bag lady

i'm not usually a purse kind of girl. i mean, i appreciate a great purse but, i'd rather spend my money on cool jeans or a cool top. in fact, some of my favorite purses have been "two-fer" deals in china town--"two fer $30!" and the only genuine leather purse that i have ever owned i just received 2 summers ago (thank you jen jen!). nevertheless, i like to browse websites for cool bags. these are a few of my favorites. they are all obnoxiously expensive...guess it's a good things i'm not much of a purse girl! all from piperlime.com.

what not to wear wednesday

1. don't wear a top where your bra straps are showing. it's not sexy--it's a faux pas.
2. don't wear denim with denim. only 1 piece of denim should be worn at a time.
3. don't wear overalls-EVER. (yes i wore them back in the day but, i have since learned that there is NOTHING cute about them AT ALL)
4. i don't like to mix black and brown. black and gray is fine. brown and gray is fine. but black and brown...not so much.it's too blah looking.
5. remember that all cleavage isn't necessarily good cleavage so, keep it covered.

and those are all the tips for today. i'd love to hear from others about what's on THEIR what-not-to-wear lists.

in honor of poppy

my grandfather, poppy art, died on thursday. he was 94. he and my grandmother had been married for 67 years. i find it kind of funny and just a sign of our culture that 1., i was at my salon with color on my hair when i got the news and, 2. i found out via text.

in honor of poppy art, here are some fashions from the year he was born--1915. enjoy! (and be thankful these styles haven't come back around...yet!)
